Marilyn Barton is an artist living and working in Gold Canyon, Arizona. She has been painting in Watercolor, Pastel, and Charcoal.
Marilyn began her art experimentation at UCLA. At the University she concentrated on the many aspects of fine art including, life drawing, illustration, photography, painting, printmaking and art history. In recent years, she studied watercolor from a well-known teacher and artist/publisher in the Palm Springs area. She continues her studies with classes in drawing with pencil, charcoal and pastel. Most recently she is exploring portraiture through her drawing classes.
During travels in and around Arizona, Marilyn is capturing the beauty of the area in her unique style and colorations in both watercolor and pastel. Recently, her instructors have remarked that she is a true 'colorist' by the use of color in a striking and stylistic manner.
Marilyn has recently expanded her interests to teaching watercolor. In her recent classes, students have explored color, color mixing, watercolor techniques and a variety of subject matter to increase their knowledge of watercolor painting. Marilyn will be teaching in the fall of 2010 at Central Arizona College. It is an interesting class called 'Watercolor: The Next Step' open to all levels of experience. We will explore problems and solutions based on the student input.
The Gold Canyon Arts Council chose her watercolor painting 'Cactus Flower' as the poster winner for the 2006 Canyon Arts Festival, held in January 2006. This painting was printed on the cover of the Gold Canyon Ledger in January 2007. Her pastel painting, 'Agave' was featured on the Ledger's April 2007 magazine cover. She has exhibited at many venues in the Gold Canyon/Apache Junction area as well as Apache Junction City Hall. Marilyn was selected as the featured artist of the Superstition Mountain Museum for the month of August 2007 and 2009. Also in 2009 she had a one-man show at the Gallery in the local Arboretum.
In 2008 Marilyn exhibited in four local shows: Canyon Arts Festival 2008, Artists of the Superstitions Spring Members show, the Art Studio Tour hosted by Artists of the Supersitions and the Fall Members Show for Artists of the Superstitions. She was teaching seminars at the local community college as well.
In 2009 you can see Marilyn's work displayed at the Superstition Mountain Museum in May and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in September. She will also participate in many local shows with new works of art in watercolor and pastel. Another seminar is planned for the spring at the Central Arizona College.
2010 finds Marilyn again at local art shows in January, February, March and April. Her busy show schedule starts up again in November at the Studio Tour hosted by the AOTS art group, and another Fall members show by AOTS after Thanksgiving in November. An October show has been added - at 'The Farm' on October 3.
In addition to a busy show schedule, Marilyn is vice-president of the Artists of the Superstitions (AOTS) art group and on the board of directors for Gold Canyon Arts Council where she is in charge of producing the January Arts Festival.
In 2011 Marilyn already has plans to exhibit in January, February, March and April. A teaching schedule will also keep her very busy.
